AI stock tools glossary
What the terms on AI stock tool pricing pages, dashboards and marketing actually mean.
Quick answer
This glossary defines 12 terms used by AI stock pickers, screeners and pattern-recognition tools, each in one sentence followed by practical context and an example. The terms that matter most when judging any tool's claims are benchmark, alpha, backtesting, overfitting and survivorship bias. Definitions are general information, not financial advice.
Terms A–Z
A
- AI stock picker
- An AI stock picker is software that uses machine learning or other statistical models to rank, score or suggest individual stocks to buy, sell or watch.
- AI stock score
- An AI stock score is a single number or grade that a model assigns to a stock to summarise how favourably it rates that stock's outlook over a stated time horizon.
- Alpha
- Alpha is the part of an investment's return above or below what its benchmark or risk level would predict, often used as shorthand for beating the market.
B
- Backtesting
- Backtesting is testing a trading or investing rule on historical market data to see how it would have performed had it been followed in the past.
- Benchmark (S&P 500)
- A benchmark is a standard used to judge investment performance; for US stock tools it is usually the S&P 500, an index of about 500 large US companies weighted by market value.
- Buy/sell signal
- A buy or sell signal is an alert generated by a rule or model indicating that the conditions it tracks suggest entering or exiting a position in a stock at that moment.
C
- Chart pattern recognition
- Chart pattern recognition is the automated detection of recurring shapes in price charts, such as head and shoulders, triangles, flags or double bottoms, that technical analysts read as possible continuation or reversal setups.
F
- Free-trial auto-renewal
- Free-trial auto-renewal is a subscription term under which a free trial automatically converts into a paid plan, charging your saved card, unless you cancel before the trial ends.
O
- Overfitting
- Overfitting is when a model or trading rule is tuned so closely to historical data that it captures noise instead of a lasting pattern, so it performs well in backtests but poorly on new data.
Q
- Quant rating
- A quant rating is a stock grade produced by a rules-based quantitative model that scores measurable factors such as valuation, growth, profitability, momentum and earnings revisions, without case-by-case human judgement.
S
- Stock screener
- A stock screener is a tool that filters a market's stocks down to a shortlist matching criteria you set, such as price, market cap, valuation ratios, technical indicators or AI scores.
- Survivorship bias
- Survivorship bias is the error of judging results only from the stocks, funds or strategies that still exist, ignoring those that failed or disappeared, which makes past performance look better than it was.
