What is free-trial auto-renewal?

Many stock tools ask for a card when you start a trial. If you do nothing, the first payment is taken when the trial ends, and if you chose an annual plan at signup that can be a full year's price.

Before starting a trial, note the exact end date and time zone, whether cancelling stops the charge immediately or only the next renewal, and whether the vendor offers refunds. Terms vary between tools and can change, so read them on the vendor's own pricing or terms page.

A simple habit helps: set a reminder a day or two before the trial ends, and check that your account shows the subscription as cancelled afterwards. We record each tool's trial terms, with the date we checked them, on its profile page.

Example

If you start a 7-day trial on 1 March with a card on file and do not cancel, you would typically be charged for the paid plan on or around 8 March.
