What is a quant rating?
Quick answer
A quant rating is a stock grade produced by a rules-based quantitative model that scores measurable factors such as valuation, growth, profitability, momentum and earnings revisions, without case-by-case human judgement.
Quant rating, explained
"Quant" is short for quantitative. A quant model applies the same set of factors to every stock in its universe, scores each factor relative to peers, and combines the factor scores into an overall rating, such as Strong Buy to Strong Sell or a numeric grade.
Quant ratings and AI scores overlap. The difference is mostly in how the weights are set: classic quant ratings use fixed, often published factor rules, while machine-learning models learn weights from data and can be harder to explain.
Because factors are measured relative to peers, a stock can rate highly simply because its sector looks cheap or is trending. Read the factor breakdown, not only the headline grade, and remember that factor performance changes across market cycles.
Example
A stock with strong earnings revisions and momentum but an expensive valuation might receive an overall quant rating of Buy, with the valuation factor graded poorly and the others graded well.
