## Definition

A buy or sell signal is an alert generated by a rule or model indicating that the conditions it tracks suggest entering or exiting a position in a stock at that moment.

## Buy/sell signal, explained

Signals can come from simple technical rules, such as a moving-average crossover, from detected chart patterns, or from machine-learning models. They are usually delivered as on-screen labels, watchlist flags, emails or app notifications.

A signal is only as useful as the rules around it. Check what triggers it, the intended holding period, whether it comes with a suggested exit or stop level, and how its past signals were measured, including the ones that failed.

Acting on every signal can mean frequent trading, which adds costs and, in taxable accounts, short-term gains. Many users treat signals as prompts for their own research rather than instructions.

## Example

A tool might issue a buy signal when a stock's price breaks above a resistance level on above-average volume, and a sell signal when it later falls below its 20-day moving average.
