## Definition

Chart pattern recognition is the automated detection of recurring shapes in price charts, such as head and shoulders, triangles, flags or double bottoms, that technical analysts read as possible continuation or reversal setups.

## Chart pattern recognition, explained

Spotting patterns by eye is slow and subjective. Pattern-recognition software scans thousands of charts across several timeframes and flags where a known pattern appears to be forming or has just completed, often with a suggested breakout level.

Some tools attach a confidence level or a historical success rate to each detected pattern. Treat those figures with care: they depend on how the vendor defines a pattern and a success, and they are usually measured on past data by the vendor itself.

Patterns describe what price has done, not what it must do next. Many traders use detected patterns as a starting point and confirm them with volume, trend and their own risk rules before acting.

## Example

A pattern-recognition tool might flag that a stock has formed an ascending triangle on its daily chart and mark the resistance level a breakout would need to clear.
